Vendors, landlords nabbed for illegal waste dumping in Eastleigh
By Nancy Marende, September 2, 2025Authorities in Nairobi have arrested several vendors and landlords in Eastleigh, Kamukunji Constituency, for illegal waste disposal, which has been clogging roads and drainage systems in the busy commercial hub.
In a statement on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria revealed that those arrested include barbershop operators and small hotel owners accused of indiscriminately dumping garbage on the roads, leaving heaps of waste that blocked nearly half of the roadway.
He also stated that further investigations revealed that the offenders had clogged the entire drainage system with waste, thereby worsening sanitation and increasing the risk of flooding in the area.
The persons of interest are expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
Furthermore, Mosiria warned that the county will not tolerate environmental lawbreakers, stating that his office has been receiving numerous complaints from residents about worsening pollution, with reports that some landlords are encouraging tenants to dispose of waste illegally.
“We are issuing a strict warning to the people of Eastleigh. This impunity will not continue. Our teams will be closely monitoring the situation and enforcing the law to restore environmental order in the area,” Mosiria said.
He further announced that enforcement teams would maintain a permanent presence in Eastleigh, camping both day and night to ensure full compliance with waste management regulations.

Waste management
This comes a few hours after Mosiria directed vendors along Muratina Road in Eastleigh to register with Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) for proper waste management.
Speaking when he led an operation of clearing heaps of garbage that had been dumped along the road where some vendors had partially blocked the road with waste from their businesses on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, he said the county will no longer tolerate poor garbage disposal practices that put public health and road safety at risk.
Furthermore, they restored order on the busy road after traders were found disposing of their waste haphazardly, creating both an eyesore and an obstruction to motorists and pedestrians.
“We have taken immediate action by clearing and removing all the garbage that had caused the obstruction. At the same time, we have issued a strict warning, directing them to register with Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) for proper waste management,” he stated.
The county boss further assured residents that routine monitoring would be intensified in Eastleigh to ensure traders adhered to waste management regulations.
