Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a U.S. federal holiday marking the birthday of the late rights activist.
It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday which is on January 15.
Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, which is a way to channel King’s life and teachings into community action, began soon after President Ronald Regan signed the bill in 1968 – campaigning for a federal holiday in honour of the King almost 20 years after his assassination.
Before his assassination, Martin Luther King, Jr. participated in and led marches for the right to vote, desegregation, labour rights, and other civil rights.
He also oversaw the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
