The United States government has announced that its embassy premises in Nairobi will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025.

In a statement released on Friday, January 17, 2025, the embassy said the closure will be in accordance with the U.S. federal National Day of Service in marking Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

“The embassy will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,” the embassy stated.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a U.S. federal holiday marking the birthday of the late rights activist.

It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday which is on January 15.

Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, which is a way to channel King’s life and teachings into community action, began soon after President Ronald Regan signed the bill in 1968 – campaigning for a federal holiday in honour of the King almost 20 years after his assassination.

Before his assassination, Martin Luther King, Jr. participated in and led marches for the right to vote, desegregation, labour rights, and other civil rights.

He also oversaw the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

Activities done

Most meaningful activities done to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service include volunteering, attending events, and learning about the life of the legend.

Others include providing food assistance, promoting health, and beautifying the community.
