Uhuru mourns Mwalimu Samuel Gatama Njuguna

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined family, friends, and community members in Gatundu South to mourn the late Mwalimu Samuel Gatama Njuguna.

In a statement on Monday night, September 15, 2025, the office of the fourth president revealed that Uhuru visited the family home to convey his condolences and pay tribute to Mwalimu Gatama’s decades of service in education and leadership.

“Earlier today, former President Uhuru Kenyatta condoled with the family of the late Mwalimu Samuel Gatama Njuguna at their home in Gatundu South. He joined relatives, friends, and community members in mourning a man remembered for his lifelong service in education and leadership,” the statement read in part.

 He described the late Mwalimu as a man of faith, humility, and hard work whose impact will be felt for generations.

In his message of comfort, the former Head of State urged the family to draw strength and pride from Gatama’s legacy.

“He encouraged the family to take pride in Mwalimu Gatama’s legacy of faith, humility, and hard work, and prayed for strength, peace, and God’s grace upon the family during this period of grief,” read the statement in part.

Mwalimu Samuel

He was the beloved husband of Margret Wangui Gatama and loving father of Stephen Njuguna, Paul Karanja, Mary Wambui, James Kiongho and Isaac Munyoroku.

He was the brother to the late Alice Muthoni Kihuha, Reuth Waithera, Kiongo Njuguna, Eunice Njeri, Dr Njoroge and Samuel Thiong’o.

The cottage is expected to leave the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) bypass on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 7:00 am for the funeral service, which will be held at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Gitare church at 9:00 am.

Thereafter, the burial will take place at his family home in Kiamworia village, Gatundu South Constituency, Kiambu County.
