President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to attend the wedding ceremony of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and city lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo.

The traditional Kikuyu ceremony takes place at Kiamugumo Primary School in Gichugu, Kirinyaga.

As at the time of going to press on Saturday 1pm, neither the bride nor the groom had arrived at the venue.

The Head of State, who is the chief guest, also hadn’t arrived.

K24 Digital understands that at least 2, 000 guests, including cabinet secretaries, governors, deputy governors, chief administrative secretaries, MPs, among other leaders were invited to the event.

Youth Affairs (CAS), Rachel Shebesh, was among the guests who — by 1pm — had arrived at the venue.

“[I think] the [Kirinyaga] governor chose to do a traditional Kikuyu wedding ahead of the White wedding because of her commitment to the [Kikuyu] culture,” Shebesh said.

“We, as leaders in Government, have come to support her. Above all, we are here because she is our friend,” added the Youth Affairs CAS, who clarified that the traditional wedding is as good as any other formal solemnisation of a union.

“This traditional wedding is recognised in law. However, if Waiguru wants to hold a White wedding, she can do so. But as it is now, she will be formally married,” said Shebesh.
