President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed 34 Court of Appeal Judges.

In a Kenya Gazette notice dated Thursday, June 3, President Uhuru appointed judges Msagha Amraphael Mbogholi, Omondi Hellen Amollo, Ngugi Grace Mumbi, Francis Tuiyott, Nyamweya Pauline Nyaboke, Lesiit Jessie and Kibaya Imaana Laibuta to the Court of Appeal.

However, notably missing on the list are justices Aggrey Muchelule, George Odunga, Weldon Korir and Prof Joel Ngugi.

“In excercise of the powers conferred by Article 166 (1) (b) of the Constitution of Kenya, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint Baari Christine Noontatu, Gakeri Jacob Kariuki and Keli Jemima Wanz to the Employment and Labour relations court,” the notice read.

The President also appointed justices Mwaure Ann Ngibuini, Matanga Bernard Odongo Manani, Rutto Stella Chemtai, Kebira Ocharo,
Kitiku Agnes Mueni-Nzei and Nderitu David Njagi to the Labour relations court.

Other judges appointed by Uhuru are Mboya Oguttu Joseph, Naikuni Lucas Leperes,
Mwanyale Michael Ngolo, Addraya Edda Dena, Kimani Lilian Gathoni, Kamau Joseph Mugo,
Wabwoto Karoph Edward and Koross Anne Yatich Kipingor to be Judges of the Environment and Land Court.

Justices Gicheru Maxwell Nduiga, Mogeni Ann Jacqueline Akhalemesi, Ongarora Fred Nyagaka, Christopher Kyania Nzili, Mugo David Mwangi, Omollo Lynette Achieng’, Washe Emmanuel Mutwana, Nyukuri Annet,
Murigi Theresa Wairimu, Asati Esther were also appointed to the Environment and Land Court.

In June 2020 Uhuru came under attack from the Judiciary and the Law Society of Kenya over his refusal to appoint 41 judges nominated by the Judcial Service Commission (JSC).

In Uhuru’s defense was Attorney General Kihara Kariuki who said the President would not appoint judges with questionable character.

“His Excellency the President will not abdicate his role as Head of State and Government to appoint persons with a questionable record to serve the nation in the solemn role of judge,” the AG said.
