Trans Nzoia: Body of man who drowned in River Sabwani retrieved by local divers
By Emanuel Tarus, November 3, 2025Local divers in Trans Nzoia County have retrieved the body of Dominic Simenga, a resident of Bikeke village in Kiminini Constituency, who drowned in River Sabwani mid last week.
Confirming the recovery, Kiminini MP Maurice Kakai Bisau urged residents of Trans Nzoia to exercise extreme caution when crossing rivers, especially during the ongoing heavy rains.

“It is very regrettable that we have lost a young man who drowned while trying to cross the River Sabwani. While we mourn him, let us be very careful whenever we cross rivers and bridges so that we don’t lose more lives,” Bisau told residents who had gathered at the riverbank to witness the retrieval.

The lawmaker also challenged Governor George Natembeya’s administration to strengthen its disaster response systems, saying the county government had been slow in reacting to emergencies.
“Natembeya’s administration, just like any other county, has a budget line for disaster management. What is happening right now shows very little response. On the Kwanza side, we saw county officials escorting relief items delivered by the National Government. We want to tell the County Government of Trans Nzoia not to sleep on the job—our people are suffering,” Bisau lamented.
He further called on families to take precautions at home, advising married women not to allow their husbands to visit drinking dens during the rainy season to avoid further tragedies.
“Crossing over to the other side to look for alcohol is dangerous. Who will take care of your wife and children when you die? Our women, if your husband likes crossing the river to drink, please lock them in so that they don’t drown and leave you widowed,” the MP said.
Bisau also revealed that Public Service and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku is expected to visit Trans Nzoia on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, to distribute relief items to flood victims.
So far, 20,225 people have been displaced from their homes by floods in Trans Nzoia County. The most affected areas include Namanjalala, Tembelela, Maliki, Kapsitwet, Lurare, Soymining in Kwanza Constituency, and Sirende in Kiminini.
