Chief Justice David Maraga has said his legacy as the head of the Judiciary will be judged by Kenyans ahead of his exit next years when he hits the mandatory retirement age.
“My assessment is that we have done our best. Others will come and do their bit,” said Maraga.
He was speaking at Migori High Court on Wednesday, October 21, during an impromptu meeting to check the progress of the court.
The CJ said that he received the mantle of leadership from Dr. Willy Mutunga whom he credited with setting the foundation for improving the Judiciary’s infrastructure.
“I took it to another level from Mutunga. Someone else will carry it from there. Mutunga established a number of things which I would have never established, I carried on,” he said.
Maraga said he will not publicly talk about his advisory to President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament over failure to enact the two-thirds gender rule.
“I gave my advisory to the President. I have done my part and the bucks stops with him. The matter is already in court and I would not wish to comment further on it,” he said.
He said lack of infrastructure to curb the spread of Covid-19 and shortage of staff have affected work.
He said in Migori “rooms for the new court were designed before Covid-19 outbreak which has seen laborers work in shifts.”
