A Standard Two pupil in Igembe Central, Meru county is nursing an ear injury after his uncle allegedly bit him because of a family dispute concerning land.
The minor, who was treated at Kangeta sub-county hospital and discharged, is said to have been locked in the house and bitten by his uncle who accused him of trespassing.
According to family sources, the boy, who had just arrived home from school for lunch, had gone to his uncle’s home to borrow a bag that he wanted to use to carry food for his grandfather.
“I went to borrow a bag to carry lunch for my grandfather. When I arrived at my uncle’s home, he accused me of trespassing in his compound and locked me on the house.
He then bit my ear and when I screamed he set me free. I rushed back to school where I told the deputy headteacher about the incident. He took me to hospital and called my father,” said the child.
Land row
The incident shocked residents who threatened to lynch the man. “We found angry villagers who had stormed the man’s home ready to lynch him but we rescued him,” said area chief Ezekiel Rwito, adding that the suspect was locked up at Murigene Police Station.
“It is inhuman to attack an innocent child over a dispute that he is not involved. Justice should prevail,” said the chief.
Family sources said the attacker and the father of the seven-year-old child, who are brothers, have been embroiled in a land dispute.
“The two brothers have been having a disagreement over land and it seems the culprit extended the grudge to his nephew,” said a neighbour.
