Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been freed on Ksh15 million cash bail or a Ksh30 million bond and a surety of a similar amount.

Chief Magistrate in the Anti-Corruption Court, Douglas Ogoti, released the governor, who was arrested last Friday on suspicion of misappropriating Ksh357 million belonging to the taxpayer.

The magistrate ordered that Mike Sonko shouldn’t be allowed to access his office without being accompanied by a law enforcement officer. Consequently, Sonko has been barred from dispensing his gubernatorial duties.

The governor was ordered to surrender his passport to the court, and that he shouldn’t publicly comment on the case.

Further, the court told Sonko to ensure that his supporters don’t cause unrest or incite them to rowdiness.

Sonko’s co-accused have also been barred from approaching or communicating with witnesses in the corruption and abuse of office case against them.

More soon.
