National Police Service communications director, Charles Owino, claims Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko verbally abused a senior cop, who was overseeing his arrest in Voi and subsequent transportation to Nairobi on Friday, December 6.

Sonko is detained after the anti-graft agency, EACC, allegedly unearthed a Ksh357 million irregular procurement deal said to have been orchestrated by the county chief.

On Friday, the EACC said they cornered the governor in Voi when he was escaping arrest after being trailed for at least 11 hours.

“… the police caught up with the governor at Voi on Nairobi-Mombasa highway. During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist arrest, hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In the process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment,” said Charles Owino in a press statement dated Saturday, December 7.

“Consequent to the acts of lawlessness against lawful police action, the police will prefer assault and other related charges against the governor.”

-Planned unrest-

“… We have reports that a group of individuals is mobilising to cause civil unrest. The general public is therefore warned that persons intending to assemble, demonstrate, or picket must do so with strict adherence to the law.”

Sonko, who is accused of engaging in economic crimes, will be arraigned on Monday, December 9.

He is currently being held in custody at EACC holding cells after his bid to secure anticipatory bail on Friday failed.
