Sifuna delighted as Kenyans engage Parliamentarians ahead of budget reading
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is overjoyed that Kenyans have rallied and called their Members of Parliament ahead of Thursday’s budget reading.
Sharing on his X account, Sifuna noted that Kenyans are experiencing a civic awakening and he is delighted about it.
In addition, Sifuna expressed appreciation for netizens using public spaces to speak out about matters pertinent to them.
“The civic awakening in Kenya is something to behold. I like that citizens are taking up public spaces to express themselves on key matters,” Sifuna noted.
It was evident to Sifuna that Kenyans from all walks of life including comedians and influencers were using their networks in a positive manner to spread proper public awareness.
“Content creators, comedians, everyone is taking up space hitherto hogged by politicos like me and doing a great job at it!” Senator Sifuna added.
Several hours before the budget was due to be read, Kenyans rallied together on several platforms, sharing contact information for different legislators. Their main concern was the budget, which is slated to be read on June 13, 2024.

Additionally, Sifuna informed members of the Orange Democratic Party that the plan was to reject the proposed finance bill for 2024.
“You are calling your MPs finally! I’m happy wakenya wenzangu(fellow Kenyans). And before you ask, the standing instruction to ODM Party MPs is to #RejectFinanceBill2024 in toto,” Sifuna added.
Weeks after poking holes into the Finance Bill 2024 which outlines how revenue will be collected, Kenyans have expressed dissatisfaction with the Appropriations Bill which shows how the revenue will be spent.

Ahead of the budget reading a section of Kenyans are pessimistic about the prospects of the country’s budget estimates addressing key concerns affecting the economy.

Kenyans have continued to call for a review of the government revenue and expenditure plans for the 2024/2025 fiscal year ahead of the budget reading on June 13.
According to the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Kenya will spend an estimated Ksh4 trillion with a budget that reduces allocation for key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, trade, transport and energy.
For some Kenyans, debt management should be the priority in the budget with the hope that the country will not incorporate new loans as part of the initiative to fund the budget.
