Several people feared dead after a plane crashes in Kwale

Several people are feared dead after a passenger aeroplane lost control and crashed at Nyando, Tsimba Golini, in Kwale County.

The aeroplane was from Diani heading to Kichwatembo in the Maasai Mara. The area County Commissioner Steve Orinde has confirmed the incident.

“It is true, but I can’t speak more since we are collecting information,” he said. According to an eyewitness, the private aeroplane was carrying tourists and fell at around 8.30 am.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the aeroplane crashed because of bad weather. Kwale County has been experiencing average rainfall since morning. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

KCAA responds

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed that an aircraft registered as 5Y-CCA crashed early Tuesday morning, October 28, 2025, in Kwale County.

The plane, which was travelling from Diani to Kichwa Tembo, went down at around 8:30 a.m. local time (0530Z), according to KCAA Director General Emile N. Arao.

KCAA said there were 12 people on board at the time of the crash. Government teams have been sent to the site to investigate the incident and assess the damage.

“The Authority confirms that an aircraft en route from Diani to Kichwa Tembo crashed at 0530Z. Government agencies are on site to determine the cause and impact of the accident,” the statement said.

While the cause of the crash has not yet been revealed, KCAA assured the public that it is working with relevant authorities to carry out a full investigation.

The agency reiterated its commitment to aviation safety and regulatory oversight, in line with the Kenya Civil Aviation Act and international aviation standards.
