Senator Cherargei slams Nairobi MCAs after Sakaja’s ouster motion suspension

By , September 3, 2025

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has criticised Nairobi County Assembly Members (MCAs) following the suspension of the impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja, terming the move a serious fluke and political blunder.

The impeachment motion, which was shelved after ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto intervened, has ignited sharp political reactions, with Senator Cherargei warning of its far-reaching consequences on the operations of the Nairobi City County Assembly.

“To Nairobi MCAs, that was a serious fluke and political blunder that shall cost the integrity of the operations of Nairobi City County Assembly,” Senator Cherargei wrote in an X post on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

He further reminded the MCAs that impeachment is a political process that is neither civil nor criminal, emphasising that such a process should not be used recklessly or without clear intentions of accountability.

Senator Cherargei also cast doubt on the motives behind the threats to impeach Governor Sakaja, questioning whether the MCAs had the best interests of Nairobians at heart.

“The MCAs’ threats to Governor Sakaja were hot & didn’t have a noble intention of accountability on the resources of Nairobi City County,” he noted.

This comes amid rising concerns over governance and service delivery in Nairobi, with critics accusing the county leadership of inefficiency and mismanagement. However, others see the impeachment threat as a politically charged move with little focus on actual reform.

Cherargei warned the Nairobi MCAs, suggesting that the window for action is rapidly closing and that their credibility is now on the line.

“To Nairobi City County MCAs, 60 days shall lapse; you shall do nothing about it unless you impeach the Governor!” he scoffed.

Relief for Sakaja?

Sakaja’s looming impeachment was temporarily defused following high-level interventions by President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Raila held a closed-door meeting with Sakaja and ODM-allied MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF), during which he persuaded them to suspend their push for impeachment. The discussions were aimed at creating space for dialogue and reconciliation between the governor and the assembly.

Nairobi County ODM Chairperson George Aladwa announced that the ODM MCAs had agreed to put the impeachment bid on hold for one month, giving Governor Sakaja time to adjust his leadership approach and mend ties with the Assembly.

Aladwa also revealed that Sakaja acknowledged all the accusations the MCAs levelled and apologised.

“We have deliberated for nearly four hours, and the MCAs have raised all their concerns. Nairobi leadership, as well as the party, has also resolved to drop the impending impeachment to allow us to correct the wrong,” Aladwa said in a press briefing.
