Ruto meets church leaders, echoes Bishop Oginde’s call for moral renewal

Speaking after a meeting with officials from the Anglican Diocese of Nairobi, led by Bishop Jonathan Kabiru, at State House, Nairobi on Thursday, July 31, 2025, the head of state emphasised that national transformation requires a whole-of-society approach, echoing recent sentiments by Bishop Oginde on the urgent need for moral renewal.
According to Ruto, every sector has a vital role to play in addressing challenges faced by the nation, while noting the importance of religious institutions.
“The transformation of our nation requires a whole-of-society approach. Every sector, including religious institutions, has a vital role to play in addressing the challenges in our country,” said Ruto.
Likewise, the Head of State also acknowledged that he is working closely with the religious leaders to strengthen the government institution in the delivery of universal health coverage.
“We are working closely with religious leaders to strengthen our moral and social fabric, the delivery of universal health coverage and quality education for all. Met officials of the Anglican Diocese of Nairobi, led by Bishop Jonathan Kabiru, State House, Nairobi,” stated the President.
Bishop Oginde’s Viral prayer
Ruto’s remarks come just a day after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chairperson, David Oginde, went viral over a fierce and rare prayer he made at State House in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
At the time, the EACC boss made the prayer during the Assent to the Conflict of Interest Bill, 2023 and the Social Protection Bill, 2025, at State House, an event that was chaired by President William Ruto.
Notably, a rare and unexpected turn of events, Bishop Oginde assumed his first role as a church minister and made a prayer that may have caused jitters around the room and the country.
In his prayer, Bishop Oginde condemned the “cancer” of corruption, sending a chilling warning to corrupt officials.
While making his prayers against corrupt officials, the CITAM Bishop compared corrupt leaders to Ananias and Sapphira from the Bible, who were punished for lying and stealing.
“You are the same God who delivered judgment to Ananias and Sapphira, who conspired to circumvent what You had established,” Oginde said in his prayer.
