Deputy President (DP) William Ruto has urged Kenyans to take personal responsibility to curb the further spread of coronavirus following the lifting of lockdowns in the country.

Speaking at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi on Tuesday where he hosted members of the clergy from Nyeri County, DP Ruto said the only way to beat the pandemic is for individuals to observe the guidelines issued by the national government.

“Like the President said yesterday, it is not going to be the might of our security agencies, it is not going to be the preparedness in terms of our health facilities, it is the simple things that every Kenyan will do that will make us overcome the challenge we have,” said Ruto.

Some of the guidelines issued including sanitizing our hands regularly, maintaining high standards of personal hygiene, keeping social distance, and avoid unnecessary travel.

On Monday, President Kenyatta lifted cessation of movement out in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa and Marsabit counties after months of partial lockdown.

The President also allowed churches and mosques to operate but limited the number of congregants at any given time to 100.

The total number of COVID-19 infections in the country rose to 8,250 on July 7, after 183 more people tested positive.

However, the number of recoveries continued to increase as 90 patients were discharged, bringing total of those healed to 2,504.

Despite the rising recoveries, the death toll on Tuesday rose to 167 as three people died of the virus.

So far, the Ministry of Health has tested 193,455 samples in a targeted exercise that has focused on contact tracing.
