Russian embassy clarifies on deportation of its citizen from Kenya
By Lutta Njomo, September 27, 2025The Russian Embassy in Kenya has come out strongly to refute claims that its citizen was deported from the country.
In a statement on Saturday, September 27, 2025, the embassy explained that Kenyan law enforcement officers escorted its citizen to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation for questioning in the evening of September 25, 2025.
According to the embassy, the Russian was questioned about his business activities in Kenya and then left the country the following day, as planned.
“In the evening of September 25, 2025, Kenyan law enforcement officers escorted Mikhail Lyapin, a citizen of the Russian Federation, to one of Nairobi offices of the Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in order to question him about his business activities in the country. Upon completing all necessary procedures, in the afternoon of September 26, Lyapin, in accordance with his previous plans, left Kenya,” the statement read in part.

No official information regarding under-dealings
While clarifying that the Russian citizen flew out according to his previous plan, the embassy made it clear that it had not received any information regarding the said business dealings.
Moreover, the embassy firmly debunked claims that the Russian was its employee.
“Diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Nairobi provided the necessary consular and legal assistance to the Russian citizen, and also made sure that his legal rights were not violated. As of today, the Russian Embassy has no official information from the Kenyan authorities regarding any claims against the Russian citizen or his activities.
“Contrary to the reports of a number of media outlets, Mr. Lyapin has never been an employee of Russian governmental bodies and does not work at the Russian Embassy in Nairobi,” the embassy insisted.

Open to collaborate
Nonetheless, the embassy reiterated that it was ready to cooperate with Kenyan authorities regarding the stay of the Russian citizen in Kenya.
It further directed Kenyan citizens seeking to travel to Russia to make formal inquiries to avoid falling victim to job scams and human trafficking.
“The Embassy once again urges Kenyan citizens travelling to the Russian Federation for study, work, tourism, or other purposes to contact the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in Nairobi should they have any inquiries, and Russian citizens in Kenya to register with the Mission’s Consulate Section.”
