Residents living along the busy Webuye-Malaba highway say they are living in fear after two trucks collided and caught fire on Monday in the 50km road that has been plagued by a huge jam since Covid-19 hit the country.

Locals said that this is the second incident to occur in the area in a span of three months and fear that should such collisions continue to happen, they could lead to loss of lives.

In July this year, four trucks were burnt down after one truck exploded at the Teso-Bungoma border but there were no casualties.

“More 2,000 trailers are on this road from Malaba to Webuye,” said Bramwel Simiyu, in a bid to urge relevant authorities to ensure motorists and other road users are safe.

Another resident, John Maloba, said Monday’s accident was caused by a gas cylinder as one of the drivers was cooking when he was hit by an overlapping truck.
