Raila’s family demands that he should be buried within 72 hours – Kindiki
By Paulette Mboga, October 15, 2025Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has confirmed that the family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has requested that his burial take place within 72 hours.
Speaking on Wednesday on October 15, 2025, at Raila Odinga’s home in Karen, Kindiki said the committee in charge of the burial had received official communication from the family and their lawyer regarding Raila’s final wishes.

Kindiki said the government will act quickly to honour the family’s request and ensure that all arrangements are completed in the shortest time possible.
“We will move very fast in the next few hours and days. For the reason which has been communicated to us by the family of the late Prime Minister, following consultations between the family and the family lawyer. We have been advised as a committee by the family that it was the wish of Raila Odinga to be buried within the shortest time possible. The family has informed the committee that the timeline is 72 hours,” Kindiki stated.
He added that the government had already begun coordinating logistics to meet the deadline set by the family.
The Deputy President noted that officials are working around the clock to ensure that everything is done in line with both tradition and national protocol.

Body to lie in State before funeral
According to Kindiki, the body of the late opposition leader will first arrive in the country, where it will be received with full honours.
“Upon arrival, the body will be received at the airport by the President, members of the family and other officials. Escorted to Lee Funeral Home, and at 12:00 noon, the body will be moved to the Parliamentary buildings at the CBD and in Parliament, there will be a public viewing of the body of the departed Prime Minister from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm,” Kindiki explained.

The public viewing will give Kenyans a chance to pay their last respects before Raila’s body is transported for burial. The burial is now set for Sunday, October 19, 2025.
‘The burial of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga will take place on Sunday and will be conducted according to the traditions of the Anglican Church to which Raila Odinga belonged,” Kindiki concluded.
