Over 50 children have benefited from the human milk bank at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, three months since it was established.

Among them is a two-month-old baby Gift ( not his real name), born to a mother diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The then preterm baby was put on a strict breast milk diet since his mother’s milk posed  health complications.

“Since birth, baby Gift has been purely feeding on milk from this bank for two months and we can confirm that  his weight has increased from 1.5kg to 2.1kg,” said Keziah Njau, a counselling  nurse at the hospital’s newborn unit.

The bank caters for the most vulnerable, particularly preterm, underweight and critically ill infants who have no or minimal access to their mother’s milk due to reasons such as late lactation, maternal illness and death of the mother.
