Low-income earners in Nairobi spend the highest amount of time on social media, a new survey has revealed.
Nairobi residents who earn between Sh30,000 and Sh49,000 monthly spend on average three hours on social media daily.
According to the Business Daily, the survey was conducted by the United States International University Africa (USIU-Africa) and the US Embassy between December 2018 and March 2019.
Many of those social media users are glued to YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
The Institute of Economic Affairs classifies Kenyans who earn between Sh0- Sh49,656 (Sh50-000) as low income earners. Middle class Kenyans earn between Sh76,392- Sh102, 429 in 2015 data.
In the new survey, middle class earners spend up to an hour a day and usually gravitate to LinkedIn, Twitter, Yahoo and Snapchat.
Most of those in the middle class range are entry-level workers and many of them are recent university graduates.
As has been the case with online media consumption, there are more men than women active on social media.
“They lead in all the social media platforms as active users. The male highly use Yahoo and Twitter more as social media platforms … It is striking that while men use Twitter the most, women use it the least and the vice versa is true when it comes to the use of Snapchat,” said the survey that sampled 3,269 respondents aged between 14 and 55 years.
The survey also revealed that many Kenyans living in Nairobi are night hawks.
