Police threaten to auction abandoned motorbikes, issue 5-day ultimatum

Police officers in Kwale County will dispose of 15 motorbikes arrested in their station for various reasons in the next five days if the owners fail to come and collect them.

In a gazette notice dated August 23, officers at the Kwale Police Station in Kwale town have urged the owners of the said motorbikes to avail themselves for collection before September 13, 2024, when the deadline lapses.

“Notice is issued pursuant to the provisions of the Disposal of Uncollected Goods Act (Cap. 38) of the laws of Kenya and following an authority and order under Miscellaneous Criminal Case No. E 51of 2024 by Magistrate’s Court at Kwale to the owners of motorbikes and scrap metal which are lying idle and unclaimed within Kwale Police Station, to collect the said motorbikes and scrap at the said yard within thirty (21) days from the date of this publication of this notice,” the notice read in part.

Deadline to collect motorbikes

The notice dated August 23, 2024, leaves the owners of the motorbikes with slightly less than a week to collect their assets or risk losing them to auctioneers.

“Failure to which Aztec Auctioneers Nairobi shall proceed to dispose of the said motorbikes and scrap by way of public auction on behalf of Kwale Police Station if they remain uncollected/unclaimed,” the notice added.

The motorbikes in question are KMDF 617U, KMDU 356E, KMFM 638L, KMEK 378K, KMEK 814H, KMEQ 984G, KMEU 929G, KMDL 592L, KMDU 880J, LZA15EPLA2FHG53715, DG7500P BLACK, KMDK 526D, KMEE 346M, Chassis MO2A21BY9KWM90956 and KMEJ 636F

Uncollected vehicles

Similarly, various businesspeople have notified the owners of vehicles left in their yards to collect them with the full payments of service, security and storage fees accrued over time or the assets be liquidated and the said arrears be recovered.

The vehicles include a trailer in Mlolongo, a Toyota Townace at the Hariki Investments Ltd premises, a Mercedes Benz KAY 713T at Sanghani Enterprise Ltd and a Toyota Hiace at Otti Auto Garage.

The  traders note that the owners will collect the cars “upon payment of accumulated parking/storage charges together with the costs of the publication and any other incidental cost, failure to which the same shall be disposed by the way of public auction and proceed of the sale be defrayed against all accrued charges without further notice.”
