Police on Saturday morning released the findings of their preliminary investigations into the death of prominent businessman and lawyer Karanja Kabage.
Kabage died aged 70 after he was involved in a car crash on the Southern Bypass on Friday 9:47pm, police say.
In a press statement, whose undersigned is police spokesperson Charles Owino, authorities outlined the chronological order of events that happened before, during and after the road accident.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased was driving a black Land Cruiser VX along the Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni directions towards Kikuyu direction. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle veered off to the wrong side, slowed down, appeared to be making a U-turn before slightly hitting the pavement,” police say.
“A taxi driver stopped and joined another Good Samaritan. The victim requested to be driven to Nairobi Hospital. The taxi driver took control of the Land Cruiser and drove the victim to Nairobi Hospital. They were accompanied to the hospital by the Good Samaritan, who drove in a second vehicle.
“Upon arrival, the victim was unconscious. The doctors tried resuscitating him, but unfortunately, pronounced dead.
“The Inspector general has directed the Director of Criminal Investigations to institute immediate investigations into the probable cause of death,” read the police statement.
Sources told K24 Digital that the tycoon suffered a cardiac arrest while at the wheel, causing his vehicle to careen off the road before crashing.
Kabage is a prominent insurance expert.
He served as a director at African Reinsurance Corporation and First Reinsurance Brokers Limited.
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday morning mourned the Late Kabage as a “highly resourceful person, particularly in the insurance sector”.
Kabage was one of the mourners, who attended the Late Bob Collymore’s memorial service at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on Thursday.
The Late Kabage expressed interest in politics, including running unsuccessfully for Nakuru senatorial seat in the 2017 polls. He lost to Susan Kihika by a margin of 150, 000 votes.
