Police officers on patrol on Tuesday morning fatally injured one suspected gangster and recovered a firearm after he confronted a pedestrian who was on her way to work at Season Bus Stop, in Kasarani, Nairobi.
According to a report by DCI, the suspect jumped on a gateway motorbike in an attempt to escape after committing the offence.
The incident, however, turned to be the proverbial 40 days of a thief after police officers gave the motorbike a chase.
DCI says the motorbike rider upon realizing the police vehicle was after them lost control resulting in the suspect falling on the tarmac road with a thud.
The unidentified suspect was fatally injured after he refused to surrender and instead began opening fire at police officers who were after him.
“Unbowed and determined to escape from the long arm of the law, the suspect began firing at the Police vehicle that had screeched to a halt. His mistake turned costly. It only took the response from one of the officers aboard the truck to immobilize him, by injuring him fatally,” DCI said in a statement.
The suspect is believed to be part of a criminal gang that shot a man on his right arm in Githurai on Monday night.
DCI says the gang snatched a handbag from a lady and began opening fire after members of the public attempted to confront them.
The victim was rushed to St John’s hospital in Githurai where he was treated and referred to Kiambu Level 5 hospital for specialized medical attention.
