Two days of combing an unused borehole in the outskirts of Nyahururu town led to the retrieving of two bodies, one of which is believed to be that of a female teacher who went missing in mid last December.
Combing of the borehole started after police were led to the scene by one of eight people who were put in custody as part of an investigation of Ms Miriam Wanjiru’s disappearance.
By the time she disappeared, Wanjiru was a teacher of English at Bishop Louis Secondary School in Nyahururu town. She had earlier taught at Ndururumo High school in the town, according to nominated MCA, Irene Wacuka. Because of this, the teacher is well known in Nyahururu town and its environs.
Police said among the suspects in custody is the teacher’s husband indentified as Kanyi who is a driver with Nyakaca Sacco matatus which ply between Nyahururu town and Laikipia University.
Laikipia County Commissioner, Joseph Kanyariri who led top County security team in the search said Wanjiru went missing on December 17 but the matter was reported to the police on December 19.
Other police sources said the man claimed the wife did not reach home after visiting him at a local hospital where he was admitted.
Police think the murder could have been plotted in the hospital and his admission at the health facility was part of the scheme.
The teacher was said to have sold a vehicle and investigation are focusing to see if the money earned from the sale was a factor in her death.
Police backed by the County Disaster Response team pumped water out of the borehole severally to enable a man to be lowered into the 60-metre depth to retrieve the decomposed bodies.
Police had to return to the scene for the second day, Friday after one of the bodies came out without a head. The operation ended with the recovery of the head.
Neighbours think the two bodies could be that of Wanjiru and her house maid.
The County Commissioner praised the Nyahururu Sub County Criminal Investigation team led by Kezia Njeri for meticulous work that cracked the case that looked complicated at the beginning.
He said the two bodies will undergo scientific analysis to identify the victims so that the matter can be processed with the view to prosecuting the suspects.
“This is the second case the (sub-County DCI) team has been able to crack. The other was one where a lady was killed in a lodging and the killer disappeared with all her belongings including clothes, making it very difficult to have a starting point for the investigations,” Kanyiri said adding that a man is already in custody in connection to that murder and will soon be arraigned in court.
The County Commissioner appealed to men and women to always seek separation whenever a relationship is not working so that it does not end tragically.
