Some 1200 people were arrested in Eldoret over the weekend for flouting curfew regulations and Ministry of Health containment measures to contain the spread of Covid-19

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Johnstone Ipara said among those arrested were people found drinking in a congested area.

Ipara said the government will continue to arrest anybody found flouting the curfew rules that were extended for a further 21 days by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The police boss said that anyone found without a face mask or wearing them wrongly will be arrested and arraigned.

“Private vehicle owners, as well as public service vehicles, found not observing the curfew regulations will be arrested and their vehicles impounded until the owners serve their penalty,” said the police boss.

Meanwhile, Police Officers in Eldoret recovered stolen goods worth thousands of shillings.

Ipara said the items were recovered and a number of suspects arrested at Petresha Centre during an operation that targeted traders who carry out illegal business in town.

Police have been investigating the suspects after receiving a tip-off from members of the public, said Ipara.

The police chief revealed that more than 50 mobile phone accessories were recovered from the shops during the operation on Tuesday, May 19.

More than 100 pieces of electronic items were seized, including music instruments believed to have been stolen from a church, police said.

They included 53 mobile phone accessories, six music speakers, 12 electronic cables, two fridges, and a music mixture among other goods.
