One person died on the spot and scores sustained injuries in a grisly road accident along Murang’a –Kenol road on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

The 14-seater matatu was ferrying mourners who had come to collect the body of their loved one at the Murang’a mortuary, and on their way back, the front tire burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it veered off the road.

The incident occurred at a notorious black spot known as Wanjii, located a few kilometers from Murang’a town.

According to the witnesses, they heard a loud bang and shortly after, the vehicle spun in the air before landing on its roof.

“I was on the farm just near the road when I heard a loud bang and people screaming, and I rushed to see what was happening, only to find a vehicle lying upside down,” Peris Njeri, one of the witnesses, said.

“People responded very fast and the injured were rushed to the hospital even before the police officers and the rescue team arrived at the scene,” she added.

Njeri said this is a notorious black spot, as numerous accidents have occurred here, claiming tens of lives, urging the drivers to be more careful.

A few weeks ago, there was an accident involving a vehicle that was ferrying students. Luckily, no one died; they only sustained injuries,” she added.

Stephen Wainaina, the county traffic enforcement officer, said the body of the deceased was moved to the Murang’a county mortuary, awaiting postmortem, while those injured are receiving treatment at the Murang’a level five hospital.

Wainaina said the investigation into the incident has commenced and urged drivers to be careful on the road.

The increased road carnage in the country has been a concern to the stakeholders in the transport sector, who are now calling for enhanced measures to curb the accidents.

According to the statistics from the National Safety and Transport Authority, 3586 people have died in road accidents in the period from January 2025 to September 2025.

This represents an increase from 3,495 lives lost during the same period last year.
