A family in Katoto Village, Mukuru kwa Reuben has been thrown into mourning after a fire incident that left several others counting losses.
The Nairobi City County Government confirmed the unfortunate incident stating that an illegal power connection sparked a fire which in turn led to a gas explosion that affected fifty houses.
The fire spread to other houses killing a four-year-old boy.
“The Nairobi City County Government confirms a fire at Mukuru Kwa Reuben initially suspected to have been a gas fire, but a preliminary investigation indicates may be as a result of electrical fault.
“The gas cylinders located in some of the houses exploded thereafter. Approximately fifty housing units were affected,” a statement shared by Bramwell Simiyu, a Nairobi County official, read in part.
Attempts by residents to put out the fire failed to bear fruit as the raging inferno wildly spread to the rest of the houses.
The lack of sufficient water also made it difficult for the area locals to salvage the situation and put off the fire.
“We need firefighters, houses are burning down one by one; we don’t have water, it was disconnected, and as you can see the fire is spreading to the second house. We need fire brigades,” the locals said.
