Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has warned that Kenyans will not be silenced through intimidation and oppression following a new wave of abductions.
This comes after two youths were reported abducted after posting offensive images against President William Ruto.
According to Omtatah, the abductions are a result of Kenyans speaking the truth to power as a result of injustices in the country.
“The ongoing abductions and incommunicado detention of young Kenyans for daring to speak truth to power are both alarming and unacceptable. Let it be clear: no government, no matter how ruthless, can silence the revolutionary conscience of a people dedicated to justice and democracy,” Omtatah wrote on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
“Kenyans are not cowards, nor will we be silenced by fear. Our moral consciousness has overcome colonialism & tyranny in history. The desire for freedom and justice is greater than any threat, and history proves that the will of the people always triumphs over oppression.”
Kenyans, lobby groups and a section of the political class have been calling for the release of Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti, who were recently abducted after posting controversial tweets about Ruto.
“Speaking out against injustice is not just a right; it’s a responsibility. We will not legitimize oppression by cowering, nor will we abandon the fight for a free and fair Kenya. The season of great awakening is here, and no amount of fear, bloodshed, or repression can stop a united and determined people. Let us remember that tyranny thrives on fear, but liberation is built on courage and solidarity,” he added.
“Stand firm, speak out, and remain united. The future of our country depends on the collective resolve of its people. For those who have been silenced by this regime, for the heroes who have lost their lives, for those who have been detained, and for those who have suffered in pursuit of justice: we fight on.”
LSK condemns abductions
In a statement on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo criticized the abductions as a violation of citizens’ rights, describing them as part of a growing trend of repressive tactics by the government.
“We call for the immediate, unconditional release of Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti, or that they be presented before court to answer to whatever alleged charges on account of which they are being held. These abductions are contrary to the law,” Odhiambo said.
Police have not yet spoken about the recent wave of abductions.
