A Kisumu police officer died early Friday morning, just hours after he departed from the lakeside city to bury his mother-in-law in Kitui County, officials have confirmed.

Fredrick Mutuku – who was stationed at Kisumu Central Police Station –  had asked for five days off duty to lay his relative to rest, effective Friday.

According to a police report, Mutuku boarded the Nairobi-bound Eldoret Express bus ahead of the Saturday burial ceremony.

Sadly, the police officer would not join his family for the send-off as he was amongst the 14 who perished when the passenger bus collided head-on with a trailer at Pala area.

Mutuku’s absence and lack of communication perturbed his family, prompting them to reach out for help.

“They got concerned and contacted his cousin, Joseph Mulatia, currently attached to Sega Police Patrol Base, Ugenya Sub-County to come and find out his whereabouts,” read the police report.

Mutuku would later be found, dead.

“…the duty officer went to Ahero sub-county hospital in search of the said officer only to find his body lying dead at the said hospital mortuary,” the report read further.

The officers body is lying at the mortuary awaiting postmortem, and burial arrangements.

The body of the ceased is current

The deceased hails from Mutomo Sub-county, Kenze village where he was traveling to on that fateful night.
