Oburu urges ODM to remain in broad-based govt
By David Nthua, November 5, 2025Acting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Odinga has urged party members to remain in the broad-based government and focus on strengthening their political influence through unity and voter registration.
Speaking during a memorial event at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Oburu said the late Raila Odinga’s lifelong belief in democracy and the power of the ballot should guide the party’s next steps.

“The only weapon that you can fight for and make changes in this country is the ballot,” Oburu said.
“That is the only democratic principle Raila fought for. Therefore, I urge my people to stay in this broad-based government, but also vote.”

Call for unity and voter registration
Oburu said ODM’s strength lies in its unity and its ability to mobilise voters across the country.
He appealed to supporters not to be swayed by political differences or misinformation, but instead to focus on ensuring that every eligible supporter is registered to vote.
“Our unity as a party and as a people is what will keep Raila’s vision alive,” Oburu stated.
“Let us not divide ourselves at a time when the country is opening a new political chapter. The future of ODM depends on how strong and organised we remain.”
He said remaining in the broad-based government would allow ODM to continue influencing national decisions and policies that affect ordinary Kenyans.

Gratitude to President Ruto
Oburu also took a moment to express gratitude to President William Ruto, revealing for the first time how the Head of State played a key role in ensuring Raila Odinga received urgent medical care before his death.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank President William Ruto for what he did for us when Raila was sick,” Oburu said.

“We talked for about three hours. Ruto very quickly organised transport to take him to India. The same energy was seen after Raila’s death.”
His remarks drew applause from the crowd, many of whom expressed appreciation for the show of statesmanship and mutual respect between the two leaders.

Oburu concluded his speech by urging ODM members to honour Raila’s memory not through emotions or divisions, but through meaningful political participation.
“Let us vote, let us stay united, and let us protect the ideals that Baba stood for,” he said.
