Nyandarua MCA fingers Ruto over failing education system
By David Nthua, August 1, 2025Leshao Pondo MCA in Nyandarua County, Kamau Gathungu, has in black and white slammed President William Ruto and his government for the current woes facing teachers and the education sector at large.
Speaking to Kameme TV on Friday, August 1, 2025, the outspoken MCA directly addressed Ruto, saying that his administration had lost touch with the real struggles of teachers in the country.
“If you want to know when a country is failing, just look at its education system,” Gathungu said. “Education is everything, and all of us are here today because someone taught us.”
He went on to explain that the teaching profession is no longer admired as it once was. Back in the day, children used to proudly say they wanted to become teachers when they grew up. Today, nobody wants to be a teacher anymore.

Gathungu noted that teachers are under intense pressure, and some are even taking their own lives due to financial stress. He shared a sad experience of attending a burial for a teacher who had recently committed suicide because of money problems.
“It is unfortunate to see the same government that gives teachers money turn around and snatch it through the other pocket,” he said. He took issue with the housing levy being deducted from the salaries of even elderly teachers who already own homes.
“What is the logic in deducting money from a teacher who is already 50 years old and owns a house?” Gathungu asked.
Protect education
The MCA asked the government to stop putting unnecessary burdens on teachers and instead work to restore the respect and dignity of the teaching profession. He said proper investment in teachers is the first step toward fixing education in Kenya.
So far, there has been no official government response to the claims made by the MCA.
