Nurses suspend services at Bondo hospital over threats and assaults

Nurses have halted services at Bondo sub-county hospital, citing threats and attacks by individuals linked to the office of the governor.

Led by Siaya chapter union secretary, Kennedy Hamisi, on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, they vowed never to step away from their workstations until the administration acts on certain demands.

“Most of our members have suffered assaults perpetrated by individuals at the executive level. The brutality meted out to our members is unacceptable and deeply alarming,” he said.

Hamisi revisited the Bondo case, where a medical doctor was forcibly frog-marched while attending to an emergency case. The perpetrators went further to threaten termination of employment, an act that is both unlawful and abusive.

“We remind all parties that political interests must never interfere with the work of civil servants.

Hamisi said these attacks form part of the worrying trend of violence and intimidation against healthcare workers.

In the violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 2027, which guarantees the safety and protection of all employees. The nurses urged Governor Orengo to act against the violence perpetrators.

“Let Orengo condemn the attackers on healthcare workers and caution individuals associated with his office to respect healthcare professionals. We also want him to provide condolence support and compensation to the affected staff.”

Unless the demands are met, none of our members will resume duty at Bondo sub-county Hospital. Hamisi further advised well-connected individuals who believe they are powerful enough to intimidate and assault healthcare workers to personally step in and offer medical services to the people of Bondo during this period.

Yesterday, December 3, 2025, Orengo led the administration in refuting claims of an attack on a medical doctor, citing a lack of evidence.
