NTSA rolls out free nationwide school bus inspection clinics ahead of reopening

By , August 20, 2025

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a nationwide free vehicle inspection drive targeting school buses and vans ahead of school reopening, under the campaign Operation Watoto Wafike Salama.

The inspection clinics will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, at all designated NTSA inspection centres across the country. The move comes as part of efforts to ensure the safety and roadworthiness of school transport vehicles following a recent rise in road accidents.

In a statement issued on its official X account on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Authority said the initiative is aimed at protecting learners and supporting schools in identifying and fixing potential mechanical risks before transporting students for the new term.

“We will make a safety assessment to guide motor vehicle owners and schools on corrective measures to take in order to ensure the safety of all our children,” the NTSA statement read.

The clinics will help identify potential risks and guide schools and vehicle owners on corrective measures.

Inspection centres participating in the exercise include Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nyahururu, Machakos, Voi, Kitale, Kakamega, Nyeri, Thika, Kisumu, Embu, Meru, Kericho, Garissa, and the Likoni Road centre in Nairobi.

The Authority further clarified that in Kisii County, the free inspection clinic will be held a day earlier, on Friday, August 22, 2025, to accommodate local schools and transport operators.

During the exercise, NTSA inspectors will conduct comprehensive safety assessments on braking systems, tires, seatbelts, lights, and general mechanical condition.

“Operation Watoto Wafike Salama is part of NTSA’s broader strategy to reduce road accidents involving school children and to instil a national culture of road safety and accountability in school transportation systems,” the agency stated.

NTSA inspectors will conduct comprehensive checks on critical safety components, including braking systems, tires, seatbelts, lighting, and overall mechanical condition. Vehicle owners and institutions will receive immediate guidance on repairs and safety upgrades needed to meet compliance standards.

NTSA has appealed to schools and transport service providers to take advantage of the free inspection, stressing that compliance will not only enhance road safety but also build parental confidence in school transport systems.
