NIS officer, landlord die from stab wounds after trying to save woman from murderous husband

A National Intelligence Service Officer (NIS) based in Kisumu is among two people stabbed to death after intervening to save a woman from the wrath of her estranged husband.

The NIS officer, 58-year-old Benjamin Sugut and the woman’s landlord, Edwin Cheruiyot Kogo, succumbed to injuries at Mosoriot Hospital where they were taken after the stabbing incident.

Police believe the attack was premeditated as the man was already armed with a knife, which he concealed when he visited his estranged wife, Joyline Jelagat.

According to the police report, the suspect who has since been arrested had gone to his estranged wife’s shop at Kapkeringon shopping center in Nandi County.

At the shop, an argument arose the separated couple and the wife screamed for help.

Member of the public, including the NIS officer, responded to the woman’s cry for help, and it was then that the man, identified as Elkana started stabbing whoever was in sight.

By the time police officers from Kabiyet Police Station arrived at the scene, the assailant had already stabbed five people and locked himself up in his wife’s room.

Police still managed to save the assailant from the public that had surrounded the house baying for his blood.

Using force, police subdued and arrested the man. The assailant was later taken Kabiyet Sub-County Hospital and discharged in a stable condition but is held at the local police station.

Three of the assailant’s victims were treated at Mosoirot Hospital and discharged.

Of the two who were discharged, one had his thumb chopped off while the other had a minor head injury.

The third victim was referred to Kapsabet Hospital for specialised treatment of his stab wound sustained on the left side of his back.

The assailant’s murder weapon has not yet been recovered and his wife, who was not stabbed during the incident recorded a statement with the police.
