Kitui on Monday donated 20,000 face masks to Mombasa and Elgeyo Marakwet counties today.

Each county is set to receive 10,000 masks to aid in the fight against coronavirus disease.

Speaking at the Kitui County Textile Centre (KICOTEC), Governor Charity Ngilu said the masks will be a key preventive measure to curb the spread of the deadly virus in the counties.

“Covid 19 threatens lives and livelihoods and a rapid response measure is required to save lives. Today we support Elgeyo Marakwet for the double tragedy that hit them. The 28 lives lost in the mudslides at Chesegon is a critical situation that begs the support of all of us,” said Ngilu.

The governor, who is also a former Health Minister, said Kitui’s donation to Mombasa County was informed by the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections in the coastal strip.

Ngilu said her county administration will continue distributing face masks to the residents in an effort to combat coronavirus pandemic.

The Elgeyo-Marakwet’s donation was received by the county chief of staff Barmaasai Kipng’etich.

Meanwhile, Kitui County received a donation of 200 water tanks from Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) to aid in its own fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

KAM manager in charge of devolution, Samuel Mulu Mutisya, said the donation was to support the county government’s efforts to fight the virus.

Mutisya said the association will continue to give different donations calling on more corporate groups to join the cause.

While receiving the donation on April 27, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu said “the contribution would supplement the county’s efforts of distributing water storage tanks to different public spaces during the pandemic.
