A newborn baby boy from Kathitî village in Mutira ward Kirinyaga Central Sub County has been retrieved from an 80 feet deep pit latrine where the mother is suspected of dumping the infant before fleeing.

While confirming the incident, Kirinyaga County Fire Department Director John Kiama, said he was told of the incident at around 9am on Thursday and that his team rushed to the scene to save the innocent soul.

He said that after dumping the toddler into the pit, the suspect threw pieces of cut banana trunks into the same pit with the intention of killing the baby.

After carrying out the heinous act, the suspect fled to an unknown destination.

According to police, the infant was discovered by a woman who had gone to relieve herself in the latrine.

“When a worker went to the toilet, she heard a baby crying and without hesitation informed the owner of the farm identified as Njue and when he confirmed that there was a baby in the pit, he informed us of the incident without any hesitation,” Kiama said.

Once at the scene of the incident, Kiama said his team first got rid of the concrete floor which was covering the pit before the rescue mission comenced.

“It was a race against time because we wanted the save the baby’s life. We completed the rescue operation in less than 30 minutes,” he said

Kiama has said that the newborn is now receiving treatment at the Kerugoya Level 4 hospital.

While confirming the incident, Kirinyaga Central Subcounty Police Commander Johnstone Mwarigha said a manhunt to find the heartless suspect has been launched, and once arrested, she will face the full force of the law.

“We are pursuing the suspect who is still at large,” the police boss said via a telephone interview.

The Mutira ward incident has happened a few days after another infant from Kîandaî Village in Gîchûgû Constituency disappeared mysteriously.

Kirinyaga East Police Commander Antony Mbogo has said that investigations are on going.

“We are still carrying out investigations and we will give more information as soon as we get to the bottom of the matter,” he said
