Residents of Cheribisi village in Kaplamai location in Emgwen Constituency in Nandi County woke up to a rude shock after one of the resident’s cows gave birth to a calf without front legs
The cow gave birth without any complications but many were surprised to see a healthy calf without the two front legs.
William Kirui, the owner of the cow said he was shocked as all seemed normal throughout the gestation period.
“The cow gave birth normally, there were no complications but we were surprised after seeing the calf. I didn’t use artificial insemination but a bull,” Kirui said.
However, Kirui said he was happy the cow was still in good condition adding that this is the first time he witnessed such an occurrence as his cow delivered for the first time.
The first pregnancy and deliveries from my other animals have never had any abnormalities. We do hope it is fertilization problems and not a bad omen or anything to do with witchcraft,” Kirui said.
“I am happy that despite the complications I will still milk my cow and use milk since the cow is healthy and alive,” he added.
Area assistant Kaplmai sub-location chief Margaret Jebet said such an incident had never been witnessed in the area before, terming it a rare case.
“The farmer is now opting to hand over the calf to Kitale Nature Conservancy for upbringing. This is a shelter for deformed animals,” Jebet noted.
The farmer told K24 Dijital that it won’t be easy taking care of said calf and that is why he hopes to transfer it for proper management.
