Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has called on the members of the public to identify 418 bodies in their morgue that have been waiting for collection.

In a public notice seen by PD Digital, the hospital gave members of the public seven days to collect the bodies.

“… failure to which KNH will seek authority for disposal,” KNH said.

The list of the bodies is available on KNH Funeral Home.

This comes as County Government of Nakuru issued a 21 days’ notice to the public to collect unclaimed bodies at the Nakuru County Public Mortuary.

County Public Health Officer, Mr George Gachomba said 26 adult unclaimed bodies and 20 unknown foetuses have been in the mortuary for more than three months, and are in the state of decomposing.

He stated that the County’s Department of Public Health Services has exhausted all the available mechanisms to trace their next of kin without success.

A list of the bodies indicating the scenes of crime and nature of death and escort contacts has been released to assist in tracing the next of kin within 21 days.

Cap 242 of the Public Health Act says an unclaimed body should be removed from a mortuary within two weeks or else it is disposed of in a mass grave after public officers obtain a court’s permission.

Uncollected and unclaimed bodies have been congesting the mortuary and the County is also incurring huge costs in preserving them, in addition to eating into the available mortuary facilities.

Members of the public are, therefore, urged to help trace, identify and collect bodies within the mentioned time failure to which the bodies be disposed at the Nakuru South Cemetry.
