Nairobi: 60 people have died in road accidents in 2022

Police report indicates that, in 2022, 60 people have lost their lives in Nairobi as a result of road accidents.

Out of the 60, police say 16 are bodaboda riders.

In February alone, 32 people have died including two pedestrians and three cyclists who perished on Wednesday, February 9.

Speaking to the press, Nairobi Regional Traffic Police boss Joshua Omukata linked the accidents to bodaboda riders saying the riders don’t follow traffic rules and are always the cause of the accidents.

“We might lose many city dwellers by the time 2022 ends if nothing is done about the bodaboda sector. Most of the riders are unruly and careless hence the many accidents that have been recorded this year,” Omukata said.

Due to this, he ordered an operation to be launched against the unruly and overloading bodaboda riders in a crackdown that will also involve overlapping Public Service Vehicles and pedestrians who do not use the footbridges to cross the roads.

Omukata said the accidents in the CBD area are not as fatal as the ones that have been reported on Outer Ring Road, Lang’ata road, Mombasa Road, Valley Road, and Thika Road.
