Mutahi Kahiga resigns as CoG vice-chair amid Raila’s death remarks backlash
By William Muthama, October 22, 2025Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has resigned from his position as Vice-Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG) and issued a public apology following controversy over remarks which appeared to celebrate Raila Odinga’s passing.
Speaking on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Kahiga apologised to Raila’s family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) fraternity, the Luo Nation, fellow Kenyans, and political leaders from all sides of the divide.
“From the very onset, I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning nation, to the family of the Right Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Molo Odinga… for any harm that it has elicited,” Kahiga said.
He clarified that his remarks, made in vernacular, were not meant to celebrate Raila’s passing. Kahiga explained that he was commenting on the political and developmental challenges faced under the current broad-based government and the impact of Raila’s death on national planning.

“As the popular saying goes, God takes the best, and it is in this context that I made those remarks in vernacular,” he added.
The governor emphasised that the statements reflected his personal views and should not be associated with the broader community, any political affiliation, or the Council of Governors.
Acknowledging the public interest and perceived harm caused by his words, Kahiga took responsibility and announced his resignation from CoG, effective immediately.
“I am taking responsibility for the real and perceived meaning of my remarks, and as a result, I have decided that with immediate effect, I am going to step down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors,” he said.
Kahiga concluded by praying for the late Raila Odinga’s soul and urging unity in the nation. “I also pray that the soul of the Right Honourable Prime Minister Raila Odinga continue resting in eternal peace. God bless Kenya,” he said.
His resignation comes amid widespread condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum, including ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga, who had called for his resignation as vice of COG.
