Kenyan Muslims have been urged to follow Chief Kadhi’s announcement on Eid ahead of the celebrations.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, June 12, 2024, the Kenya Muslim National Council (KEMNAC) led by the council chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao said that since time immemorial traditionally the Chief Kadhi has been the one announcing the beginning and the ending of the Holy month of Ramadhan and celebrations of Eid–ul–Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.
Urging the Muslims to follow Chief Kadhi’s announcement, Juma stated that since the Kenyan Muslim pilgrims are in Mecca Saudi Arabia they will follow Mecca’s calendar.
“Sasa kuna kauli mbili hapa ya kwanza niya Fwata Council inasema tarehe moja ni Jumamosi na Eid ni Jumatatu. Arafa ni Jumapili na kuna keila ya Chief Kadhi kwamba sisi mwezi huu kwa vile mahujaji wako kule Mecca tutafwata Mecca calenda ya kule kwa sababu wao wako kule. (We have two contradicting statements, one from the Fwata council which says since Saturday is June 1, then Eid will be celebrated on Monday, and another one from Chief Kadhi’s office which vows to Mecca’s calendar since the pilgrims are there),” Juma said.
Juma says that Kenyan Muslims have been left confused because of the contradicting statements from the two offices.
“So inakuwa mwezi tarehe moja inakuwa ni Friday Jumamosi itakuwa ni siku ya Arafa na Jumapili itakuwa ni Eid sasa kuna kauli mbili, Fwata Council na office ya Chief Kadhi na kila ubande wasema uko sawa sasa ule mwisiliamu wa kawaida amekuwa confussed hajui sasa atafwata amri ya Chief Kadhi ama kikundi cha Fwata Council. (So on Friday will be June 1 then Saturday will be Arafa celebrations and then Eid will be celebrated on Sunday however the contradicting statements from the office of Fwata Council and Chief Kadhi has left Muslims confused),” he said.

Juma went further to say that the office of Chief Kadhi is a legal office recognized by the Kenya constitution and has been in assistance since time immemorial while Fwata Council was only established in 2023.
“Sisi tunataka tuwaambie waisilamu wa Kenya mzima kwamba la muhimu tubaki vile vile kuipa nafasi ofisi ya Chief Kadhi ambayo ndio ofisi ya kikatiba na Fwata council iliundwa mwaka jana it’s a new group office ya Chief Kadhi iko tangu 1858 iko Kenya na ni office ambayo kikatiba inajulikana na niofisi mwka yote imekuwa mamulaka na mambo ya mwezi Ramadhan na miezi mingineo,”he explained
KEMNAC Grand Mufti Mshali Khamis Mshali who was also present called on Muslims not to contradict Chief Kadhi’s announcement as a show of unanimity.
