Murkomen warns FGM offenders, applauds Kerio Valley firearm amnesty
By K24 Digital Reporter, October 10, 2025Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned those planning to conduct Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) during the upcoming festive season, saying the government will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute them.
Speaking on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Chawis Primary School in Elgeiyo Marakwet County during a tree planting exercise, Murkomen said the law will deal firmly with anyone found engaging in or promoting the outlawed practice.
“I want to make it very clear, anyone who dares carry out FGM will face the full force of the law. We will arrest you, prosecute you, and ensure you spend time behind bars,” he warned.
Murkomen emphasised that the government will not allow outdated traditions to destroy the lives and futures of young girls.
“We will not tolerate any individual or group that tries to hide behind culture to harm girls. Anyone found aiding or abetting this practice will be dealt with ruthlessly,” he said.

The CS further cautioned those involved in early marriages, insisting that the government is committed to ensuring gender equality.
“We must give both boys and girls equal opportunities. Early marriage is a crime, and those involved will face the law,” Murkomen said.
At the same event, Murkomen commended Kerio Valley residents for surrendering illegal firearms, noting that the region is now calm and peaceful.
“I want to thank the people of Kerio Valley for listening to my appeal to return illegal firearms. The region is now peaceful, and we must maintain that calm,” he said.
He urged those still in possession of firearms in Embobut to surrender them immediately to the newly operationalized Embobut Police Station before the government takes action.

Illegal firearms
“Anyone still holding firearms in Embobut should take them to the Embobut Police Station before the government comes for them,” Murkomen cautioned.
So far, the police have confirmed that residents of Kerio Valley continue to cooperate in large numbers with security agencies in surrendering illegal firearms under the ongoing Operation Rudisha Bunduki.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, NPS revealed that on October 6, 2025, a resident from Sibow Location voluntarily handed over an AK-47 rifle with six rounds of ammunition to the authorities, marking another successful milestone in the region’s disarmament efforts.
“This surrender brings the total to two hundred and eighty-two illegal firearms, along with two thousand and thirty-nine rounds of ammunition and one rifle grenade, that have so far been surrendered,” the statement read.
The surrender comes as the government intensifies security operations in parts of the North Rift, where communities have been urged to embrace peace and abandon the long culture of gun possession. The positive response from residents is being seen as a strong show of confidence in the government’s effort to restore order and promote lasting peace in the valley.
