Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior & National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has assured Kitui County residents of high standards of safety and security ahead of Mashujaa Day celebrations.

According to Murkomen, plans are underway by the government to ensure that the Ithookwe Stadium, which is set to host the 2025 Mashujaa Day Celebration, will meet high standards of security for all users.

The CS released the statement on Friday, 1 August 2025, on his official X account while acknowledging President William Ruto’s commitment to building modern stadiums across the country.

Similarly, according to Murkomen, while giving an update so far on the construction progress also added that the Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 is progressing well.

“In line with President’s @WiliamRuto BETA commitment to build modern stadiums in the regions, the construction of a 10,000-capacity stadium in Kitui County is progressing well. We shall ensure that the facility, which will host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, is safe and secure for users,” Murkomen said.

Expected completion date

With only two months remaining ahead of the annual Mashujaa Day Celebrations, a number of government officials have visited Kitui to inspect the ongoing obstruction of the Ithookwe stadium.

Early July 2025, Cabinet Secretary of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, visited the ongoing construction while further revealing the government’s intention with the construction.

“Our goal is not just to build stadiums, but to empower communities,” Mvurya said, also adding, “I was here in February, where I announced the Government’s intention to construct this facility, and today I am pleased to confirm that work is well underway.”

Meanwhile, according to government reports, the ongoing construction of the Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County is expected to be completed by October 6, ready on time to host Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Kitui sets aside proposed plans

Worth noting as the government rushes to wind up the project, the Kitui County government had to adjust some of its projects so as to accommodate the construction of the stadium.

Kitui Agriculture and Livestock Executive Stephen Kimwele announced that the annual Kitui County Agricultural Show and Trade Fair will not be held in 2025 so as to give room for the ongoing construction.
