A man who is accused of trying to rape a 22-year-old woman after offering her a lift is now recovering in a Murang’a hospital following a failed suicide attempt.

Police in a statement on Saturday, June 8, 2024, said the shocking incident was reported to Kandara Police Station on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“The woman was walking home from Kaburigi trading centre that evening when the motorist offered her a lift,” police said.

Unaware of the danger, the woman accepted the lift.

However, her nightmare began almost immediately as the man is said to have tried to force himself on her.

Police said the woman bravely fought back, managed to unlock the car door and escaped, raising the alarm with her screams.

She promptly reported the attack to the police, who identified the suspect as Peter Gitau Kimani.

Police said Kimani attempted to evade capture by ingesting poison on realizing that cops were closing in on him.

However, his suicide attempt failed, and he was found by police and rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital.

Police said Kimani will face charges in court as soon as he is released from the hospital.
