A family from Kiharu, Muranga county are in confusion after they failed to find their dad’s body at the morgue where they had gone to collect it for burial.

The family of Mwangi Wanyoike got the rude shock on Saturday September 18 after arriving at the Muriranjas hospital mortuary to collect his body only to be given a different one.

Peter Muchiri, a son to the deceased, said the body given to them did not resemble that of their father.

“Our father, though aged, had all teeth but the body we were given had some teeth missing” he said.

He claims that upon scrutinizing the morgue’s records, they realized that their father’s body had been released to another family.

“We demanded that the morgue attendants show us the records. We found our fathers name had been cancelled, indicating that the body had been released” he added.

They have however managed to trace the family that buried their father in Mirichu. The distraught family are now forced to wait until they obtain a court order to exhume the body.

Wanyoike’s family claimed that the previous day, when they had gone to clear the mortuary bill, they requested to see the body but were not allowed.

“We don’t know why they would not allow us to see the body unless they had already realized their mistake” a son to the deceased said.

He also claimed that one member of the other family which had mistakenly taken their father’s body raised an alarm about the body’s identity, but his relatives did not listen to him.

The family has decried incurring huge losses in burial preparations. They were forced to plant a banana in the grave which had already been dug in accordance to the Kikuyu customs.

This incident comes barely two weeks after another family from Gaitheri in Kiharu had to exhume a body they had buried after it turned that it did not belong to their kin.
