Murang’a families in anguish over mysterious disappearance of loved ones

Several families from Makuyu, Murang’a, are demanding answers after the mysterious disappearance of their relatives, with at least five people among them, including a secondary school student, reported missing since July 2025.

The disappearances, which have occurred on different dates, have thrown households into anguish as frantic efforts to trace their loved ones have not yielded any results.

One of those affected, Hellen Wachu, recounted how her husband, Peter Murigi, left home on 28 July 2025 to visit his sister’s ailing child in Kamahuha but never arrived.

“When he failed to come back that evening, I called his sister to ask about his whereabouts, but she told me he never got there,” Wachu said.

She added that Murigi’s phone was switched off, something she described as unusual and deeply worrying. Wachu later learned that he had boarded a matatu heading to Thika, contrary to their initial agreement.

“The children keep asking me when their father is coming back home, but I have nothing to tell them. All our efforts to trace him have been futile,” she added.

Another resident, Onesmus Kariuki, said his close relative, Peter Mwaura, who worked in a law office in Thika, has also been missing for nearly two months.

“We have been to his place of work, but nobody has any information on where he could have gone. Our search in hospitals and morgues has also been futile,” Kariuki said.

“We are now appealing to the government to help us trace our loved ones and bring them back home to us. We can barely sleep; everything has come to a standstill.”

Residents are urging security agencies to investigate the circumstances under which the missing people vanished and establish whether criminal elements may be involved.
