Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has condemned the inflammatory remarks made by his Senator Mithika Linturi saying the remarks have painted a negative image and ashamed the people of Meru and other communities living in Mt. Kenya.
Speaking at Kitale National Cereals and Produce Board depot in Trans Nzoia county during the national launch of the Warehouse Receipt System, Munya said Linturi’s utterances threatens peace and harmony among communities living in Rift Valley.
“We want to strongly condemn those who call other Kenyans madoadoa. Such people should zip their mouths because we want to have peace in Kenya before, during and even after the August 8 elections” Munya said.
Munya called on Kenyans to embrace one another arguing that this country’s progress relies heavily on political stability and cohesion.
“My fellow Kenyans, I’m asking you to shun divisive politics and politicians who peddle lies and propaganda meant to incite communities into unnecessary violence,” Munya appealed.
The former Meru Governor said that every Kenyan has a constitutional right to live in any part of the country.
“We all enjoy Kenyan citizenship courtesy of our 2010 Constitution. Therefore nobody should be threatened to leave their areas of residence because they are not the dominant native community” he added.
Speaking in the same event, Trans Nzoia County Member of Parliament Janet Nangabo said politics of hate speech threatens national security and called on the relevant authorities to take action against perpetrators.
“We do not want to see politicians dividing our people along tribal lines and political parties affiliations. As a mother, I feel bad whenever I see my fellow politicians using our youths to disturb peace in political rallies. That should stop” Nangabo advised.
She also challenged women to go for elective positions in this year’s general polls saying they also have the potential to lead this country and help Kenya revive her economy.
Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Sam Ojwang’ assured all the residents of the cosmopolitan county that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure that the county remains peaceful.
“It is our commitment as County Security Committee to ensure that we enjoy peace and tranquillity before, during and even beyond August 9. All those who think we shall relent in our commitment will be dealt with accordingly,” Ojwang’ warned.
