A Mount Kenya University student died after jumping from the seventh floor of the school’s Chancellor’s Tower on Monday afternoon.

The fourth-year student who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Rural Development suffered serious injuries on his legs and head.

According to to the Thika West Deputy Police Commander Daniel Kitavi, police responded to the incident but the student succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

“Police officers rushed to the scene and were able to rescue him but he died while undergoing medication at Thika Level Five Hospital where he had been taken,” he said.

Kitavi said that the student did not leave behind a suicide note.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the student may have been suffering from depression.

“We were not able to immediately establish the reason behind his cause of action but I think it’s a kind of depression or stress,” added Kitavi.

The student’s body was taken to the General Kago Funeral Home as police continue with investigations.

Students who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity revealed that the student had informed them of his intentions but they did not take the threat seriously.

“It has caught us with a lot of disbelief, we initially thought he was joking only to hear that he had executed his mission,” a student said.
