Lugari MP Ayub Savula on Sunday toured Kakamega town to assess the damage caused by the latest round of county government instigated demolitions of business premises and vowed to pursue justice and reparation for victims.

Coming a day after Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Opatranya met a hostile reception as he hosted Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe, Savula toured business sites on the Law Court Road that leads to the county hospital and Mama Watoto Supermarket/Scheme Estate Roads.

Addressing the crowds, Savula urged residents to rise up and defend their rights.

“This is the lowest the governor has sunk. We must now rise up and I’m asking you, traders, to join me in the pursuit of justice and compensation,” said the Lugari MP.

He asked affected traders to submit to him a list of all businesses affected businesses, promising to hire a lawyer to act on their behalf.

Accompanied by Sheywe Ward MCA Joab Amukhale and local Amani National Congress officials, Savula accused Oparanya of pursuing a sectarian agenda in the demolition exercise by targeting businesses owned by the poor while sparing rich traders.

The MP said that businesses owned by rich traders that are built on road reserves, riparian areas and sewer lines have never been touched.

Savula accused Oparanya of failing to initiate any tangible development project after his reelection in 2017.

“The only projects he can show for the past three years are a public cemetery for mass graves, the demolition ruins, and Orange Democratic Movement rhetoric.

On Saturday, Senator Cleophas Malala and Lurambi MP Titus Khamala visited the victims separately.

Malala, who was accused of hiring youths to mar Kagwe’s function, dismissed the allegation, claimed Oparanya had lost focus.
