MP Munyoro: Ruto will be number 4 or 5 without Raila’s support in 2027

Kigumo Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Kamau Munyoro has warned that President William Ruto’s chances in the 2027 elections could be significantly affected if ODM party leader Raila Odinga withdraws his support.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Munyoro stressed that the person who should be most concerned is President Ruto, whose 2027 prospects heavily depend on Raila’s support.

“The person who should be very worried is President Ruto because if Raila bolts, Ruto will probably be number four or five in the presidential election,” he said.

He described Ruto’s reliance on Raila as a “basket of hope”, warning that losing it could drastically alter the electoral landscape.

Munyoro further argued that Raila’s political style has never been about leadership but about holding positions in government without taking responsibility.

“He has always been interested in being in government while bearing no responsibility,” the MP stated.

He added that Raila often speaks from both sides of his mouth, claiming to be in government while criticising it at the same time.

United opposition

The MP noted that the joint opposition, which includes declared presidential contenders such as Rigathi Gachagua, represents a group with distinct ambitions.

“If these alliances were to split, it could completely reshape the 2027 elections,” he said, cautioning that internal negotiations among opposition leaders could be complicated by past government affiliations.

Elsewhere, the former presidential candidate disclosed that the united opposition will rally behind one presidential candidate.

Munyoro urged the leaders to focus on future dynamics rather than past arrangements.

“We should not be laying too much emphasis on the past; the focus has to be on the future,” he added.

He said the evolving alliances, including the United Opposition, present both opportunities and risks for all major contenders ahead of the 2027 vote.

Munyoro concluded that the coming election will test both President Ruto and the broad-based opposition, especially in scenarios where key players like Raila Odinga shift their support.

“What happens if Raila withdraws support? That is the question everyone should be asking now,” he said.
